Nether Portal Coordinate Mechanics
Distance in the Nether is scaled at an 8:1 ratio compared to the Overworld. Moving 1 block in the Nether equals traveling 8 blocks in the Overworld. Dividing your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 gives you the exact location to place a Nether portal.
Minecraft searches within a 128-block radius for existing portals when traveling between dimensions. While X and Z dictate alignment, keeping Y coordinates similar prevents portals from linking to unintended caves or roof structures.
Chunks & Block Calculations
A Minecraft chunk is a 16x16 block area extending from build height to bedrock. Dividing block coordinates by 16 (and rounding down) yields the exact chunk X and Z coordinates used in world generation and claim plugins.
Minecraft uses floor division for negative block positions. For example, block X -1 to -16 falls inside Chunk -1. The calculator handles floor rounding automatically across all dimensions.
